Louis Quigley, a senior majoring in Earth and Environmental Sciences, was awarded first place in the Engineering and Physical Sciences category at the 2024 UIC Undergraduate Research Forum.

In his research titled “The depression connection: mapping the interplay between topographical depressions and hydrologic connectivity”, Louis worked to understand the relationships between depressions in the landscape (low areas that are able to hold standing water, as in a lake) and other landscape characteristics, including watershed size and shape, slope, and elevation. He evaluated changes in depression volume and hydrologic connectivity as water gradually flooded the landscape. His findings across 4 watersheds indicate explainable relationships between depression volume and other landscape characteristics. Louis was advised by Assistant Professor Kerry Callaghan.
